SRINAGAR, June 11: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today launched a multiple sanitation drive in various wards of the city.
The drive was kick started by Minister of State for Housing & Urban Development Department Mohammad Ashraf Mir in presence of Commissioner SMC here at SK park ward office Lalchowk.
Mir while inaugurating the drive directed SMC to continue with such special sanitation drives firmly and with utmost dedication round the year and these sanitation drives shall not restrict to Srinagar only but shall be replicated in Municipal towns as well so that the entire Srinagar wears a healthy and cleaner look.
While interacting with school students on the occasion, Mir emphasized that a joint mission shall be launched where in participation of schools, colleges, educational institutions, Ngo, s and civil society has to be encouraged. .
“We have to sensitize people that besides home and personal hygiene, environmental hygiene is equally important. Throwing garbage in an open gives rise to many airborne diseases which affects the individuals health and leads to unhealthy surroundings as well ,” Mir said.
He also stressed that there should be no lapse in conducting intensive sanitation drives especially near shrines, mosques and other religious places in view of upcoming holy month Ramadan. . People thronging to these places o should not face any kind of inconvenience said the Minister.
Directions were also passed to conduct regular market checks and ensure that quality eatables including bakery, poultry and other eatables are being sold everywhere in the market to ensure food safety among consumers especially during Ramadan..
Commissioner SMC on the occasion updated the Minister that besides identifying and cleaning of bad spots in various areas, many water channels including the surface drains would be cleaned up.
S.E Drainage in this regard has been instructed to go for desilting of chronic choked drains where ever required.
Besides this the unwanted grass from the edges of the main roads and the inner roads would also be cleared up in various areas during the drive informed Commissioner SMC.
“We would be awarding top three sanitation wards with a cash prize of Rs of Rs 30000, 20000, and 10000 respectively on the concluding day for which an external committee would be constituted said Tufail Matto.
The committee shall inspect each municipal ward in the city before rating the first three excellent wards in sanitation further added Commissioner SMC.
This entire week long drive would be supervised and monitored by Chief Sanitation Officer Syed Nisar Hussain.
