Srinagar, June 12: Protests broke out in Sopore and Baramulla on Friday after people offered funeral prayers in absentia for the slain Tehreek-e-Hurriyat activist Sheikh Altaf-ur-Rehman in both the areas on the call of Syed Ali Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G).
According to KD correspondent, Police had to use force to quell the protesters. Tear gas shells were also lobbed by the police to disperse protesters who were seen throwing stones on the police officials. The clashes were going on at the time of filing of this report.
Altaf-ur-Rehman was killed by unidentified gunmen in Sopore earlier this week. Pertinently, Geelani has blamed “Indian agencies” for Rehman’s killing, alleging that the authorities have started to process to target pro-freedom voices.
