KATHUA, JUNE 30-Stressing the need for cold storage facilities and better marketing, MLA Bani, Mr Jeevan Lal today said that it is imperative that awareness programmes are organized for the farmers to motivate them to adopt latest low cost technologies for better returns.
MLA was speaking at a mega awareness camp organized by the department of horticulture at Bani.
He said that area has a tremendous potential for growing of Walnut, Apple, Pear and Stone Fruit. He said most of the orchards are established on hilly terrain areas in Lowang, Duggan, Koti Chandiar, Bani, Barnoti, & Surjan Chalog and there is need to tap the potential of the area.
Chief Horticulture Officer, Kathua Tarvinder Singh informed that Tipree Nursery is being developed under MIDH wherein Rs.25.00 lakh are proposed for building up the necessary infrastructure to produce high quality plantation.
The Department will encourage installation of Poly Green Houses in snow bound areas on 50% subsidy and Farm handling units in bearing orchards, so that their produce is graded and packed properly for marketing. The Department will also provide 50% subsidy on Power Tillers and tools/kits used for orchards management. Large number of farmers from Bhandar, Kanthal, Fatehpur, Sandroon, Gatti, Asso, Banjal and Chander participated in the mega camp. Dr. Amrish Vaid from KVK Kathua also highlighted the role of KVK for horticulture development in the area.
Other senior functionaries of the Department including District Level Subject Matter Specialist, Jyoti Parshad and District Horticulture Officer, Kathua, S.K. Shair were also present on the occasion.
MLA Bani advised the department to organize such awareness camps in other areas for sensitizing the farmers.
