The defence minister Manohar Parrikar today arrived at Leh on a one-day visit to the Ladakh Region, defence spokesman said in a statement. “He (defence minister) was accompanied by the Chief of Army Staff and was received by Army Commander, Northern Command and General Officer Commanding, Fire & Fury Corps,” he said. The Ladakh region, as per defence spokesman, is known for its extremely rugged and inhospitable terrain and extreme climate and contains within its confines some of the most difficult frontiers of the country. “On arrival at Leh, the Raksha Mantri interacted with the soldiers at the Rinchen auditorium after which he was briefed by the General Officer Commanding, Fire & Fury Corps on the prevailing military situation and state of defence preparedness along the borders of Ladakh,” he added. Parrikar accompanied by the COAS and the Army Commander also visited the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research in Leh and were briefed on the ongoing projects by the institute. He will return to Delhi on tomorrow.
