Pulwama, Aug 24: Police resorted to aerial firing and tear-gas shelling to quell violent protests in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday.
Reports said that situation turned ugly when people spotted an SOG man from Jammu Kashmir Police harassing and passing ‘lewd’ remarks on a girl near Rajpora Chowk in the district. A group of people apprehended the cop and started thrashing him, forcing the other cops to fire bullets in air. The gun shots created panic in the district and during the melee several people were injured.
“One of the SOG man deployed near Rajpora Chowk was seen stalking a local girl. The girl who used to run a shop, slapped the cop in full public glare, drawing the attention of the people, who lost cool and pounced upon the stalker,” said an eyewitness.
The girl from Puchal area (name withheld) told CNS that the stalker cop from Sopore used to harass her from past quite some time. “I have been running a shop and the cop frequently used to visit my shop despite my objections. He was threatened me of implicating in militant related activity in case I did not develop illicit relationship with him. Today, I lost my patience and slapped him in full public view after he tried to force me to come along with him,” she said.
Reports said that as the news about the incident spread, people especially youth took to streets in large numbers and attacked policemen with stones. Due to violent clashes, the shopkeepers downed their shutters and transport disappeared from the roads resulting in the complete shutdown in the district.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that police and Para-military troopers resorted to aerial firing and scores of tear-smoke shells were fired to disperse the stone-throwing protesters. The agitated protesters didn’t budge and continued to hurl stones of police vehicles. Police sources said that four police personnel including an officer were injured during the clashes.
