“Prof. Saifuddin Soz, Former Union Minister and Patron J&K Peoples’ Empowerment Mission express deepest anguish at the demise of Justice Javed Iqbal (Son of Allama Sir Dr. Mohammad Iqbal) yesterday, in Lahore. In a statement to KNS, Soz said Justice Javeed Iqbal was considered by many at the national and international level as one of the most prominent voices representing a liberal shade of Islam in Pakistan. He was an erudite scholar of Islam, apart from being an eminent jurist. Soz said that “I had the privilege of being in correspondence with him from 1993 onwards for some years. Luckily I located one of his letters to me dated March 24, 1993. He had also sent me a copy of his thought-provoking and comprehensive article titled “Process of Islamization in Pakistan” published by Pakistan’s reputed paper Muslim in its issue of June 5, 1992. That article had got circulated in many countries. I have preserved the article with me. Prof. Saifuddin Soz said that in his letter to me, he had expressed his inability to visit India for a series of lectures on Islam, due to his national and international engagements at that time, but he had promised to visit India later. Recognizing his depth of knowledge, Soz expressed an opinion, like many others, that his job of being a Judge had actually set a limitation on his contribution that he could have made very preeminently in other fields of social and political orientation. Justice Javeed Iqbal’s passing away is a great loss not only to Pakistan but also to the world, at large.
