A police officer, heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Rajbagh, was today killed in a brief encounter at Gund Dachin area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir. Police officials said that a special police team from Rajbagh, Srinagar, were chasing militants in a car in the area after recieving inputs about thier movement. As the team reached Gund Dachin, they opened fire at the militants, who were also travelling in another vehicle. The official said that the militants retaliated the police fire and a brief shootout began. “In the shootout, Altaf Ahmad, a sub inspector, was critically wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment where from he was removed to Army’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar,” the official said. Altaf later succumbed to injuries in the military hospital, he said. “The slain police officer headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) Rajbagh, Srinagar to investigate the militancy related cases,” he said. Reportedly, the militants fled from the spot. Police believes that LeT Commander Abu Qasim was also among the militants who fled. Soon after the incident, Special Operations Group of Police, army and CRPF cordoned off the whole area to nab the militants.
