At least seventeen shops were gutted in a devastating fire in a shopping complex here at Goni Khan during the intervening night of October 20/21. However, there was no report of any casualties. An official from Fire and Emergency Services said that casualties were averted as the shops were closed at the time of the incident. The fire brigade pressed thirteen fire engine and water tankers to control the flames. The fire was completely contained by 4am, however, cooling operations went on till late morning, he said. Locals said that the intensity of the fire kept rising because of the number of garments, plastic, rubber and other combustible material stored in the shops. A group of shopkeepers said that goods worth crores of rupees have been devastated in the incident. The Goni Khan Market business establishments closed their offices today to express solidarity with victims. Police has registered a case and taken up investigation to ascertain the cause of fire.
