Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thursday blamed Independent legislator from Langate, Engineer Rashid, who hosted a beef party in MLA hostel here, for the death of Zahid Rasool Bhat. Political Secretary to PDP president Peerzada Mansoor told KNS that Zahid Rasool Bhat and Showkat Ahmad were attacked in Udhampur after Engineer Rashid hosted the ‘beef party’ in MLA Hostel in Srinagar. “The beef party provoked people in Jammu region, following which they attacked the Kashmir-bound truck in which two truckers were critically injured by petrol bombs,” Mansoor, who is the political secretary of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, told KNS. The PDP leader said that the Udhampur attack was a “reaction” to the beef party. “Despite a Supreme Court order on the beef ban, Engineer Rashid hosted a beef party which flared up tension in Jammu region. And the hooligans in Udhampur reacted to the party by attacking Kashmiri drivers,” he said. Zahid and Showkat were attacked by a Hindu mob in Shivnagar in Udhampur on October 9 with petrol bombs and set the due ablaze. Zahid succumbed to his critical burnt injuries in Safdargunj hospital in New Delhi on October 18. Er Rashid had hosted a beef party in MLA hostel here and a day before Jammu region observed a complete shutdown over the rumours that three cows had been slaughtered in the region, which police later found that they had been poisoned. Er Rashid was also beaten by BJP legislators in the Legislative Assembly. Mansoor questioned the independent legislator as to why he did not host his ‘beef party’ at his home. “Hosting beef party at MLA hostel was a clear indication of provoking people in the Jammu region,” he said. Pertinently, a number of BJP legislators also stay in the MLA hostel where Rashid had hosted the party. The former legislator of Shangus Assembly segment said that no power on earth can stop Muslims from eating what is a permitted in their religion. He also said that people should not play political drama over the lives of people.
