In a tragic incident on Friday, ten workers of a private construction company were charred to death after a major fire broke out at Chanderkote in Ramban district on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. As per reports, the deceased were sleeping in temporary structures which were razed to ashes. The victims appear to have died of asphyxia and burns, sources said, adding that four were hospitalized with severe burns. “There was a fire caused probably by a short circuit at the barracks of labourers working on a tunnel project in Talwas in Chanderkote belt of Ramban district at around 1 AM today,” IGP Jammu, Danish Rana, told reporters. The deceased include earth mover operators, helpers and labourers from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and different places of Jammu and Kashmir. Five of the deceased have been identified as Rohit, a JCB operator from Himachal Pradesh, Showkat, a JCB helper from Chandigarh, Rakesh (Himachal Pradesmh), besides Irfan and Des RAJ, both from Doda. Police and other agencies launched an operation and recovered 10 bodies which are charred beyond recognition, Rana said, adding that the injured have been shifted to hospital.
