Several women protesters Saturday got injured after police fired teargas shells to disperse them during an anti-Power Development Department (PDD) demonstration in Brein-Nishat area of summer capital, Srinagar. Police used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters thereby resulted in the injuries to several women protesters. The residents carried out a protest rally against the Power Development Department (PDD) for installing insulated power lines in the area to prevent power-pilferage. The residents told KNS that they appealed higher ups several times not to install insulated power lines in the area but unfortunately their plea felt in deaf ears. “We planned to stage demonstration against the department to press them for their demands but unfortunately, the men in uniform used tear smoke shells to disperse us which led to the injuries of several women here,” they said. Inhabitants said that the government should take strict action the police officials fired tear smoke shells on the women protesters. “The actions should be taken against them so that no one could dare to do such things in future,” they said. Chief Engineer PDD, Bashir Ahmad Khan while talking to KNS that the installing of insulated lines will help the department to provide electricity without any power cut but the people are depriving the officials to complete the work. “After the lines will be installed, the power theft is impossible due to which the residents are staging protest over it,” he said. Khan however, said that despite protests, the department will continue with its proposed work.
