Officials said the Ring Road would be spread over 115 kms. The Town Planning Organization (TRO) is incorporating the ambitious project in the revised Master Plan for Srinagar.
Chief Town Planner, Kashmir, Iftikhar Ahmad Hakeem said the focus of the road construction in revised Master Plan is to have a linear road network that would reduce the traffic burden from the core city.
“The idea is to have radial network and Ring Road to pave way for a linear network that will smoothen the traffic flow,” Hakeem said.
Among the most vital road connectivity, the three-tier ring road would connect East and North areas of the city with localities on West side.
“At the moment, we have no direct connectivity from Kashmir University to Mirgund. But after completion of the first phase of Galander-Ganderbal Ring Road, we can ensure the connectivity,” the CTP said.
In an effort to provide impetus to public transport, the proposed three-tier Ring Road will also smoothen traffic between Budgam to Hazratbal and Nishat to Baramulla.
“The alternate road network will help to decentralize traffic. Unlike the present scenario where traffic diversion is reactionary, the three-tier Ring Road is being proposed after conducting numerous sample surveys and GIS mapping of the city,” he said.
Most of the three-tier Ring Roads would be four to eight lane roads while the two-phase Galander- Ganderbal Ring Road would pass through Mirgund intersection, Sebdan, Budgam and Galender.
“The pre-feasibility report of this Ring Road done completed in 2011 helped us to get a nod from the center for the funding. The radial network is among the highlights of the revised Master Plan,” he said.
