Srinagar |May 11: An Islamist leader has been hanged in Bangladesh for crimes during the war of independence from Pakistan in 1971. Motiur Rahman Nizami, 73, was executed early on Wednesday (local time), Law Minister Anisul Haq confirmed.
He had been convicted of genocide, rape and torture. Nizami had led Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party, Jamaat-e-Islami. Nizami was the fifth and highest-ranked opposition leader to be executed since December 2013 for war crimes.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat Conference (G) chief Syed Ali Geelani while expressing shock, sorrow and grief over the hanging of Ameer Jamaat-i-Islami Bangladesh appealed for organizing special prayers and funeral prayers in absentia for him on 13 May after the Friday congregational prayers.
He said that Bangladesh has practically become a province of India and the Awami League president Sheikh Haseena on the behest of India has started a war against the Islamist people of the country.
Geelani said that the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh are being punished for their affection and love with Islam and Pakistan and it is moral responsibility of the government of Pakistan to raise their voice and concerns against this injustice in every possible ways and try to bring this serious issue into the notice of the organization of Islamic countries (OIC).
The Hurriyat Chairman paid glowing tributes to Matti-ul-Rehman Nizami and said that besides being a great Islamic scholar, Shaheed Matti-ul-Rehman sahab was also a open minded person and a prominent intellectual who had spent his entire life in the service of Islam and for the establishment of the justice based system of governance.
Personal Secretary to Geelani Peer Saifullah led the funeral prayers at Hyderpora.
Meanwhile, Amir Muslim Deeni Mahaz Dr Mohammad Qasim Faktoo, also expressed his profound grief and sorrow over the execution of prominent religious scholar Mutie u Rehman Nizami of Jamat e Islamic Bangladesh.
Lashing out at Sheikh Haseena regime, Dr Qasim said that it is a great tragedy and on the behest of devilish forces, Islamic scholars are being hanged in Bangladesh. (PTK)
