Independent lawmaker Engineer Rasheed was arrested on Monday when he took out a protest rally from JK House New Delhi to PM House adjacent to Chanakya Puri area.
Spokesperson of Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP)-which Rasheed heads-Inam un Nabi from the union capital that the party flew to New Delhi some days ago where it intended to hold a protest demonstration outside Parliament House.
“But the BJP led Union Government denied us the permission to hold protests against civilian killings outside Parliament House,” he said.
“We were asked to apply for permission to hold protests at Jantar Mantar which was given,” Inam said, “but today, we were told by a senior police officer that the permission was withdrawn.”
Jantar Mantar is the only place where people from any race, party, Religion have been holding protests but Rasheed was denied this space as well, Inam said.
Inam said that the AIP activists led by Engineer Rasheed planned to hold the protests outside Prime Minister’s House.
“We took out the march from JK House Chanakya Puri but a heavy contingent of Delhi Police swung in to action and arrested Rasheed along with his supporters,” Inam said while castigating the government for unethical ban on peaceful protests.
At least 52 civilians were killed by government forces since July 09, 2016 during mass uprising against “the Indian establishment” in Kashmir. The protests erupted a day after popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed by forces in Kokernag area of South Kashmir on July 08. (KL)
