Srinagar, May 20, : In a bid to foil Hafta-e-Shahdat program of Hurriyat Conference (M) as the joint resistance camp has called people to assemble at Eidgah on Sunday (May 21), police have launched a crackdown against Awami Action Committee workers and so far dozens of activists have been detained.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq told news agency that raids are being conducted on Hurriyat activists to stop them from participating in Hafta-e-Shahdat program on Sunday. “I have already been placed under house but we have resolved to take out a march on Sunday. The joint Resistance leadership particularly Muhammad Yasin Malik will also hold a march on Sunday,” he said and condemned government action.
Mirwaiz said that police on Saturday sealed Mirwaiz Manzil, Jamia Masjid and Martyrs Graveyard at Eidgah.
Police also foiled a rally of workers of Awami Action Committee (AAC) in Rajouri Kadal area and detained several activists of the party.
Condemning the police action, an AAC spokesman said that many activists were detained after they took out a rally organized as part of the Hafta-e-Shahdat in Rajouri Kadal.
Meanwhile, authorities on Saturday imposed restrictions in the areas falling under Maharajgunj, Safakadal and Nowhatta police stations in old Srinagar city.
“Areas falling under these police station witnessed restrictions,” a district official said adding that restrictions may remain in vogue on Sunday as well. “We haven’t decided any about Sunday but most probably there will be restrictions,” he added. (CNS)
