Srinagar, August 14: Thousands of people today attended the funeral of Hizbul Mujahideen operational commander Muhammad Yasin Yatoo alias Mehmood Ghaznavi and two other youth killed by government forces yesterday in Kashmir.
According to GNS, thousands of people assembled at Nagam in Chadoora area of Budgam district to attend the funeral of Ghaznavi who was killed yesterday during a gunfight with forces at Shopian along with two of his associates. The gunfight had also left two troopers dead. Locals said that the body of the slain was handed over to his family only yesterday evening and it was kept in his home for whole night.
They, the locals, said that despite heavy rainfall, thousands of people assembled at Nagam and participated in the last rites of the slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander amid massive anti-India and pro-freedom sloganeering. They said that several rounds of funerals were held for the Ghaznavi who was active in the field of militancy since 1997. The mourners waved Pakistani flags on the occasion and chanted pro-militant slogans.
Soon after the funeral was over, clashes erupted at Chadoora between youths and government forces. Police used teargas canisters against the protesters. A complete shutdown was observed in Budgam district against the killing of Ghaznavi while internet services remained suspended also. Meanwhile, thousands of people also attended the funeral prayers of two youths killed yesterday by forces during protests at Kakapora in Pulwama district and at Zainpora in Shopian district. Both were laid to rest amid massive anti-India sloganeering.
While there was no strike call, but a complete shutdown was observed in parts of Shopian, Pulwama and Kulgam districts. In Srinagar, authorities imposed restrictions in Old City areas to thwart protests against the killings. Due to curbs in downtown, the traffic and pedestrian movement in Srinagar areas was less. However the day passed off peacefully.
Militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen while paying rich tributes to the slain Mehmood Ghaznavi appointed Muhammad Bin Qasim as its new field operational commander, the spokesman of Hizb Saleem Hashmi said in a statement issued to GNS today. It is believed that Muhammad Bin Qasim is the code name of Riyaz Naiko, one of the senior commanders of the Hizb active in south Kashmir since year 2012.(GNS)
