Sopore : The number of stray dogs in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have grown profusely. The exact figures might be unavailable but a range can be estimated. They are often seen breeding on roads out in open.
Almost every street in Sopore town has a number of stray dogs. Individual dogs may not be a problem unless provoked, but when they team up to form a pack, they act pretty much the way a crazed mob does,For residents, the idea of not knowing when a harmless looking mongrel will turn into a deadly predator is unnerving groups of people while talking to Kashmir Despatch .
This is a major problem for all of us , stray dogs have become a bigger threat to human health and lives. Stray dogs bite people, chase them when they go to prayers early in the morning, Waseem Ahmed a resident of Naseem Bagh Sopore told The Kashmir Despatch added that these dogs have made the life hell, particularly for women and old age persons.
Residents of areas like Chankhan, Iqbal Nagar, Noorbagh, Arampora, Chinkipora, Seer etc complaining of increased population of stray dogs which causes problems.
Some of the dogs living in our area are obviously rabid. Not just bites, but several accidents also keep taking place as they keep following the motorists even after dark, said Adnan Ahmed to this newspaper , he said that many children have been bitten in the last few months, making the others too scared to go out and play.
Meanwhile Executive Officer of Muncipal Council Sopore Ghulam Ahmed Lone told Kashmir Despatch that the main problem which we are having in town is garbage dumping site, due to this problem dogs are seen in large numbers in and around the town,added that efforts are being made to keep the streets free from dogs, and we hope to make the town free of stray dogs very soon.
