BJP banking on Molvis to expand footprint in Valley

Srinagar: At a time when Kashmir based political parties are still struggling to resume political activities a year after abrogation of Article 370, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is working overtime to make deep inroads into the Valley.

For this, the party has chalked out a plan by involving religious clerics to influence public opinion in the region where the party is seen as a pariah for its ideology.

In the Valley, clerics who are deeply embedded in the community enjoy a great degree of support and sway over masses. As such they have been effective in using pulpit to mobilise people in the past albeit for a different cause. But this would be the first time when religious clerics would be galvanising people for the BJP.

So far, the saffron party has been unable to win a single seat in past elections in the Muslim-majority region. But with the existing political vacuum after a major crackdown against formidable political parties including National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party on the eve of abrogation of Article 370 August last year, the BJP has been mobilising cadre in reaching out to people.

According to party functionaries, they have targeted 12 electoral constituencies including Sonawar, which was considered as a NC bastion until 2014 assembly polls when Omar Abdullah lost to PDP candidate Mohammad Ashraf Mir.

“The party believes that it (Sonawar) is the potential constituency for assembly for the BJP. It has voted in times when elsewhere people choose not to vote. It also has made ground easy for PDP to make the entry which otherwise was the NC bastion. We will work on it from the block level to make ground favourable for us,” said a party leader.

For this, the party is approaching a battery of social influencers particularly Molvis to support them.
“This will be the core strategy for the party. Molvis are the most influential part of the society, who have a say on many matters.

“You see what NC, PDP did. We already have brought Molvis in the party fold. We will be guiding them about the matters around which they have to focus in their sermons,” said a senior party leader. (Agencies)
