Pandits seek return of illegally occupied properties; wish to live under foolproof security

Date:

Srinagar/ 25 January : Pandits who have left Valley during 90’s have sought government’s intervention in return of illegally occupied properties in Kashmir and expressed their desire to live under foolproof security. Sources told that most of the Kashmiri pandit organizations want the government to create separate colonies in the newly carved out Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to accommodate the displaced community.

Sources told news agency that this is a part of ‘wish-list’ that different organizations have recently sent to the government on behalf of the displaced community. “Kashmiri pandits should be rehabilitated with foolproof security. They should be kept together in two or three designated colonies”, a senior member of Reconciliation, return & rehabilitation of Kashmiri pandits said.

He said, “the government should ensure complete security. The young generation of the displaced community should also get due share of employment in the UT”.

The Modi led BJP government’s decision to scrap Article 370 had given new hope among the community that it would take some solid steps  for their return.

Sources said that the RSS, the ideologue of BJP is working as a ‘pressure group’ to the central government in ensuring the return of Kashmiri pandits into the Valley.

Lauding the annulment of Article 370, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat had said, “This effort will come to fruition only when justice denied under the influence of Article 370 is restored, injustices occurred are brought to an end. It will happen when our Kashmiri Pandits who were unjustly driven away are brought back and rehabilitated and allowed to remain secure, fearless, patriotic and Hindu.”

A senior functionary of RSS told that organization was satisfied by the steps taken by the Modi government to resolve the Kashmir problem but now wants it to take “solid steps” to ensure displaced Kashmiri Pandits return to the Valley. He added that the organization had already sent suggestions to the government.

It has been learnt that the RSS has listed security as its primary concern for Kashmiri Pandits. It has called on the central and UT governments to create a law that will guarantee the security of relocated Kashmiris. “They should not face any kind of inconvenience in security-related matters”. The Sangh also wants special colonies for the community. “Resettling them in a scattered manner will create greater security risks. Some colonies are indeed being created but there are two families living in one flat,” RSS document had said.

The leadership of the Kashmiri pandiths also wants the government to decide as to how the returning Pandits will be able to earn their livelihood. “Employment opportunity according to their eligibility should be made available to them,” they had said.

The organizations working for Kashmiri Pandits has also urged upon the government to assess the damage to properties previously held by the community. “The illegally occupied properties should be traced and efforts should be made to determine as to how they can be returned to the Kashmiri Pandits,” they have demanded.

The Narendra Modi Government has flagged the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the Valley with “dignity, security and assured livelihood,” an issue on which it will lay special emphasis during its tenure. The BJP had mentioned return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri migrants to the Valley in its manifesto.

According to official data, 24,202 families migrated after militancy erupted in the Valley in 1990. A total number of 38,119 families are registered with the Jammu and Kashmir Revenue and Relief Ministry till now. However the Kashmiri Pandit organizations, however, put the number of total displaced people anywhere between six to seven lakh now.
