The Army on Saturday said that it foiled an infiltration bid by killing three militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in frontier district of Kupwara.
The General Officer Commanding of Baramulla based 19 Infantry Division, Major General Raj Shukla while talking to Greater Kashmir said: “We have killed three militants at Toot Mar Gali near the Line of Control in Nowgam Sector.”
Giving details of the incident an Army official said: “Soldiers of 3 Kumaon Regiment spotted a group of militants soon after they crossed the fence near the LoC. They were asked to stop. They opened heavy fire on the soldiers which was retaliated triggering a gunfight in which three unidentified militants were killed.”
“Besides recovery of arms and ammunition, we have recovered some documents from them. The analysis of the documents will help us to ascertain the identity of the slain militants,” the official added.
Pertinently, this is the third infiltration bid which the Army claimed to have foiled in the past two weeks. On May 25, three Army soldiers and a militant were killed in Tangdhar sector and on May 31, four militants and a civilian were killed in 36 hour long encounter in Tangdhar town near Army brigade headquarter. Two residential houses were raised to rubble during the same gunfight.
This is the first infiltration bid by militants on the Nowgam sector of Handwara this year.
Last year on Dec 3, 2014 six militants and a JCO were killed in two day long encounter in the same area.
