Senior National Conference leader and former Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone Mondayasked the government not to use the Supreme Court’s stay order on beef ban judgment as an escape route to disallow the state assembly to scrap beef ban law. He also disclosed that his party National Conference is set to move an adjournment motion to seek discussion on article 35A related to yet another row on property rights act. When asked to react on a Supreme Court judgment staying the order of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court on beef ban Mohammad Akbar Lone told KNS “The PDP-BJP coalition government should not and won’t be allowed to use the Supreme Court ruling as an escape route to disallow the assembly to scrap the beef ban law. The Supreme court has not barred state assembly from scrapping the beef ban law and as such PDP-BJP coalition government has no constitutional right to either suspend or cancel the process of pushing though bill seeking scrapping of beef ban law. The ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) is in connivance with BJP trying to neutralise the powers of state assembly in law making processes and particularly on issues concerning special status of the state under article 370 of the constitution”. Lone said that PDP has ill designs to weaken the constitutional powers of the state assembly but won’t be allowed to play with the special status enjoyed by the state article 370. Disclosing that his party National Conference is all set to move an adjournment motion to seek debate on article 35 related to property rights act of the state Lone said “We want the assembly to debar article 35 A immediately as the issue has snowballed into a major controversy. People have apprehension keeping in view the ill designs of PDP-BJP government on property rights act”. He warned the government of serious consequences if it continues to neutralise the constitutional powers of the state just to erode the prestige of the state assembly.
