Sopore: Jhelum banks have turned garbage dumps in many areas of sopore town of Baramulla district Unabated dumping of the garbage on the river banks has irked residents but authorities seem to be in slumber.
Blaming local shopkeepers and some residents of the area, said, “The river banks once acted as a refreshing spot where people used to spend quality free time in a healthy environment. But now the irresponsible residents have created a menace in the area.”
“You can see non-biodegradable items like plastic bottles etc floating in the river. It is depressing and really a sad thing,” he added.
Echoing similar views, another local resident said that many drains from chankhan to shercolony stretch of sopore open into the river.
“To add to the problems, the waste from the local abettors, bones and kitchen waste is dumped on the embankment. And the foul smell emanating from it has made life hell for the residents of the area,” local said.
“Local women, who have to visit river for the daily chores, are worst affected,” he said.
He claimed that despite many requests and pleas to the local administration, the issue remains unattended. “Nobody seems to be interested in stopping this practice,” he added.
