Jammu: Hitting out at the ruling PDP-BJP government in the state, former Minister and senior state vice president Raman Bhalla today accused them of insensitivity in providing basic facilities like drinking water and electricity to the people of Jammu region.”The horrible power outage and acute drinking water shortage is unprecedented, which speaks of cruelty of the government towards residents. They seem to have been held to ransom by the insensible, negligent and anti-people government. Govt has failed to ensure basic facilities,” former minister and senior vice president of Congress, said while addressing public meeting of hundreds of people at Nanak Nagar, Sector-7 organized by senior Congress leader, Reena Satti. Prominent among those who were present on the occasion include Parveen Singh, Block President Nanak Nagar, Kulbushan Sharma, Sanjay Gupta, Sanjay Murli beside others. The former minister claimed apart from power and drinking water shortage, scarcity of food grains at CAPD outlets has added to the miseries of poor people,” he said.”Instead of responding to grim situation, arising in the wake of ill-conceived policies of the coalition, and solving the problems of the people, the government is trying to silence the voice of the opposition and the media by leveling false accusations,” he said. He also said the wrong implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA) has played havoc with the interests of rationed population.”Not only have they been denied much needed food support due to reduction in scale but a huge chunk of population stands denied of rations by this anti-poor measure,” he said.
People of Jammu region are being neglected and discriminated despite repeated assurances from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. He said BJP had assured of development of all the regions and that the differences and the alienation existing between people of Jammu and those of Kashmir Valley would be eliminated. “However, the fact of the matter is that the people of Jammu region are still feeling neglected and discriminated in the present regime,” Bhalla said. He said the sloe pace renovation work of Mubarak Mandi complex as Dogra Heritage and the ropeway project linking Mubarak Mandi with Bahu Fort which is still in limbo are examples of BJP’s failure to properly represent people of Jammu.”In the tourism sector, Jammu got merely 20-25 percent funds allocation and out of 13 newly identified tourist spots for development, Jammu has only four whereas rest are in Kashmir province”, he added. Bhalla further said that Jammu district which has 11 assembly constituencies was allotted Rs 200 crore whereas some of the districts having only one or two assembly constituencies have been provided almost same amount for the development. He said that the Tawi Lake Project in Jammu which was scheduled to be completed in March has been extended for two years. Bhalla claimed no serious efforts are being made about the diversion of four streams carrying the city garbage in the Tawi River.
“In the allotment of indoor stadiums, out of 12 indoor stadiums envisaged only three are allocated to Jammu region and nine to Kashmir province with two in Ladakh. The Congress leader said the discrimination is being faced by the people of the region in the matter of development of roads, infrastructure, irrigation, agriculture and horticulture sector. Former Minister said that Jammu was facing severe power and water crises, but BJP was busy in the party programmes. He said apart from power cuts, most areas in Jammu were facing heavy voltage fluctuations due to which there were reports of damage to electronic gadgets like TV, refrigerator and air-conditioners. He expressed serious concern over unscheduled and long power curtailment in the entire Jammu province and blamed the PDP-BJP coalition for subjecting people to worse kind of harassment during the ongoing scorching summer season. Bhalla said that long duration black outs are giving sleepless nights to residents, who are forced to remain outdoors and stage night-long protests. “The power scenario is highly precarious, which has made life horrible as the region is reeling under unprecedented heat these days”, he said and rued over low voltage whenever power is made available during the brief spells.
While seeking regulated power supply, he sought deployment of tankers to cater to the needs of areas which are facing acute drinking water crisis. The water supply is also getting impacted in absence of power supply in urban areas and the people remain clueless on these basic necessities. He lambasted the government for its inability to provide drinking water to people. “The government is taking credit by starting new and innovative projects. It is pity that it has failed to address drinking water woes of people,” he said. Senior Vice President PCC questioned the BJP for its failure to address the aspirations of people of Jammu region, as the party always accused the state and centre governments for not giving the due treatment to Jammu. Now, when they (BJP) are in power, they feel that Jammu region has got its due in every sphere. They should fulfill the slogans, they used to raise, while in opposition. Their silence on all important issues of Jammu region speaks of their total surrender for power. The people seek answer from BJP, while the PDP has also shown a complete lust for power, when it joined hands with BJP, while although, opposing tooth and nail its ideology and policies and programmes.
