Three girls drowned after a tractor they were travelling on met with an accident in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district late Friday.
Witnesses said that a tractor carrying children back home from fields lost its control while negotiating a sharp curve and fell into a pond at Khan Mohalla Bala in Deedikoot village, some 8 km from Kupwara on Friday evening.
Five minor girls were left struggling with deep waters after the mishap, said a witness.
Saleem Khan, who lost two daughters in the mishap, showed exemplary courage and jumped into the pond. But he was successful in rescuing only two girls and could not trace the other three girls, witnesses said.
“Fire and emergency service was called in from Vilgam station but unfortunately its dewatering pump could not start for initial 20 minutes,” said a resident.
Later, the bodies of three girls were fished out from the lake.
They were identified as Safia Saleem (9) and Sabia Saleem (10) – both sisters – and Insha Rashid (12).
