2025 begins with 59 % deficit rainfall in J&K

MeT issues ‘yellow alert’, isolated cold wave till Jan 10

Srinagar, Jan 08 : The New Year—2025 has begun with the deficit precipitation as Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a deficiency of 59 per cent in the first week of January.

From January 01 to January 08, J&K has recorded a deficit rainfall of 59 per cent despite the recent snowfall in most parts of the Valley. Against the normal rainfall of 18.4 mm, J&K has recorded a precipitation of 7.6 mm.

Nine stations across J&K including the winter capital of the Union Territory—Jammu recorded large deficit rainfall. The large deficit rainfall is being marked from 60 per cent to 99 per cent.

Four stations including the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar have recorded the normal precipitation during the period. As per the details, Budgam and Ganderbal stations in central Kashmir saw large excess rainfall from January 01 to January 08.

Meanwhile, the local Meteorological department (MeT) has issued a yellow warning, saying that there is a possibility of an isolated cold wave till January 10.

Amidst the forecast of an isolated cold wave, Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that there is a possibility of generally dry weather conditions and cloudiness during the 10th evening and night.

On January 11, he said that generally cloudy weather is expected with possibility of light rain in plains of Jammu and snow at isolated higher reaches of Jammu division & Kashmir division.

On January 12-14, the weather would remain generally dry, he said, adding that on January 15 & 16, generally cloudy weather is expected with possibility of light snow at isolated to scattered places.
