Prayagraj, Jan 30: A tragic stampede at the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Wednesday claimed the lives of at least 30 people and left 60 others injured as massive crowds gathered for the Mauni Amavasya ‘Amrit Snan,’ officials said, as reported by HT.
Mahakumbh DIG Vaibhav Krishna confirmed the casualties, stating, “Over 30 people have lost their lives, and several others are injured in the unfortunate incident. Rescue and relief operations are underway.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to CM Yogi Adityanath to take stock of the situation and offered all possible assistance.
The tragedy has sparked political criticism, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge blaming “half-baked arrangements and excessive focus on self-promotion.” Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded accountability, stating, “Those who falsely claimed a ‘world-class system’ must take moral responsibility and step down.”
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and efforts are ongoing to restore order at the site. Further updates are expected as investigations proceed.
