Bandipora Apr 17:- In a tragic incident that has left the residents of Lankrishipora Area in shock, nearly 70 sheep drowned in the Wular Lake due to a sudden increase in water level.

Locals told Kashmir Despatch, that this is the first time such a tragedy has occurred in this area. The incident took place at around 7 o’clock in the morning when the sheep grazing in the wide fields on the banks of Wular drowned as the water level suddenly increased in the lake due to the heavy rainfall in the morning.

The heavy rainfall that lasted for almost two hours in the morning caused the water level to suddenly rise, and take the lives of many sheep. Despite the efforts of the local people, only a few sheep were rescued, while more than 70 are still reported missing and believed to have drowned.

Speaking with the Kashmir Despatch, Mohd Yaqoob, a shepherds who have been taking care of the sheep in the area for the last 8 years, say that they have never witnessed such a tragedy before. They managed to save themselves and others with great difficulty.

The sheep belonged to many local landowners who have suffered a huge financial loss due to the absence of insurance.

The officials from the Shape Department and Bandipora police reached the spot and conducted a thorough physical and damage estimation.
