98.3 percent polling recorded in 310 BDC blocks in JK

Srinagar, Oct 24 : In first of its kind, the Block Development Council (BDC) polls were conducted in Jammu and Kashmir amid tight security with officials stating that the elections for electing the chairpersons of BDCs were conducted peacefully.

Officials told the wire service that nearly 100 per cent polling was recorded in the maiden BDC polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the statistics given by the government, 98.3 per cent polling was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir. The polls to elect chairpersons of BDCs were held in 310 blocks in the state and 1,065 candidates were in the fray, of whom 27 including 22 from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were elected unopposed.

Pertinently, majority of the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir including Congress, National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Conference (PC) and others boycotted the polls.

Officials said that tights security arrangements were put in place by the government to ensure smooth, free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

It is for the first time that the BDC polls were conducted in Jammu and Kashmir. The government soon after holding the Panchayat and Municipal polls started process for the conduct of BDC polls to strengthen the Panchayat Raj system.

Officials told KNO that the polls were conducted peacefully and no untoward incident was reported throughout the day. (KNO)
