Sopore: Scores of students of Government Degree College for Women Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Monday protested against the shortage of teachers in the college.
As per Kashmir Despatch Correspondent, the students pointed out that the shortage of teachers at the college has been affecting their studies for the past year.
“It has been almost a month since colleges were reopened after winter break in Kashmir but unfortunately, we are suffering due to the shortage of teachers till date,” said one of the protesting students.
She said that they have not attended any class yet as there is no teacher available which speaks the volume of education standard.
“For main subjects teachers are not available here, however, only a few teachers are permanent and the rest are contractual and they too have not been appointed for the current session,” said another student.
Another protesting student said that she is coming from far away and her father is a laborer.
“Every day I have to pay 100 Rs but it’s very sad that here I am only wasting time as so far I have not attended a single class due to the non-available of teachers, ” she added.
“We have been approaching the college administration for a long time, but nothing has been done in this regard,” she further said.
The other students also alleged that most of the posts of teachers at the college are vacant only adding to the misery of students and they’re able to attend merely one-two classes a day.
The protesting students also alleged that the buses are lying defunct here as no drivers are available.
The principal of the College, Prof. Bashir admitted that there is a shortage of teaching staff and said that they have already forwarded the same to the higher-ups but all in vain.
Director of Colleges for the Higher Education Department, Dr. Yasmeen Ashai, stated that she will investigate the issue regarding the college.
Dr. Ashai assured that she will address the issue promptly to prevent any unnecessary waste of the students’ time.
