Baramulla: A 24-year-old Saneeb Khan of Khawaja Bagh area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has emerged as a self-taught sensation in the world of dance.
Overcoming societal stigmas and limited resources, Khan’s journey of relentless dedication and self-expression is igniting hope and carving a new narrative for dance enthusiasts across the region.
Khan’s journey into the realm of dance commenced during his matriculation years, where he embarked on a quest to hone his skills through the infinite realm of online tutorials. His initial performance during Teacher’s Day at his school ignited the spark that would soon engulf his entire life in a fiery passion for movement.
Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and innovation, Khan delved into diverse dance forms such as Lyrical, Tutting, Krump, and Freestyle, all from the confines of his home. “I was a novice at first, learning step by step from YouTube. It took two arduous years of relentless practice to finally grace the stage,” Khan recounted.
While pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the College of Vocational Studies at Delhi University, his journey took a transformative turn. Drawn into the all-encompassing world of Hip Hop, he discovered a profound medium of expression that transcended cultural and geographical boundaries. Inspired by the unity and passion of fellow artists from diverse backgrounds, Khan’s devotion to the art form deepened exponentially.
The stage became his canvas as he represented the CVS Zestreets dance society at numerous major events across India, including prominent fests at IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, and BITS Pilani Rajasthan. His performances at over 30-35 fests in Delhi resonated with audiences, propelling him into the spotlight of recognition and respect.
Reflecting on his achievements, he stated, “As an individual, I was recognized as the best fresher among all dance societies of Delhi University. Our team secured victories at several fests, earning us the second-best team accolade in the circuit.”
Undeterred by challenges, Khan relentlessly pursued his craft, even amidst social resistance within his own region. “Dancing in Kashmir is a battle against societal norms,” he asserted, acknowledging the hurdles he faced while passionately pursuing his dream.
Fueled by his unrelenting drive, Khan sought to bridge the gap between his homeland and the world stage. Using social media as a powerful tool, he showcased his art to a global audience, a testament to his unwavering commitment and innovative spirit.
“In the context of art, learning the fundamentals is like going to school – it’s vital for building a strong base and foundation. Without that knowledge, artists may struggle to find their place,” he stated.
Saneeb Khan’s indomitable spirit serves as an inspiration for aspiring artists and continues to inspire and educate. Through his dance, he has enriched his life and carved a path for the growth and recognition of Hip Hop culture in a broader context.
