Srinagar : In a commendable collaboration between the Department of Psychiatry at SKIMS Medical College Bemina Srinagar and the Indian Psychiatric Society North Zone, an enlightening awareness program unfolded in partnership with the Department of School Education Kashmir.
This initiative, thoughtfully timed to coincide with World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2023, centered on the theme “Mental Health is a Universal Right.” Its primary objective was to challenge and dispel the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health issues within society.
The online webinar served as a pivotal gathering point for educators and counselors, vital bridges in addressing this crucial issue. Leading the charge was Prof. Abdul Majid, Head of the Psychiatry Department at SKIMS Medical College Srinagar, and President of IPS North Zone. Mr. Nisar Ahmad, the Nodal Officer from the Directorate of School Education Department, Kashmir, joined him in steering this valuable event.
Esteemed faculty members brought their expertise to the fore, with Prof. Sandeep Grover from PGIMER Chandigarh, Prof. Naresh Nebhinani, HOD Psychiatry at AIIMS Jodhpur, Dr. Manu Arora, HOD Psychiatry at GMC Jammu, and Dr. Yasir Hassan Rather from IMHANS-Kashmir, engaging in informative discussions on prevalent psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, and drug addiction.
The inaugural session featured keynote addresses by two distinguished figures, Dr. Vinay Kumar, President of the Indian Psychiatric Society, and Dr. Laxmikant Rathi, Vice President of the Indian Psychiatric Society. Both underscored the pivotal role of awareness programs in dispelling myths and furnishing the public with accurate insights into mental health concerns.
Prof. Abdul Majid’s concluding remarks introduced a straightforward yet profound mnemonic – the ABCs: Adequate Sleep, Balanced diet, Connecting with family, friends, and relatives, Devotion to social causes and religious practices, and regular Exercise. He underscored the necessity of seeking professional assistance from mental health experts when required.
Prof. Abdul Majid conveyed heartfelt appreciation to the School Education department, along with the dedicated teachers and counselors from across Jammu and Kashmir. Their enthusiastic participation ensured the program’s resounding success, with over 1000 attendees. Initiatives of this nature seek to demystify mental health issues, facilitate early referrals, and offer timely interventions to prevent minor psychological challenges from evolving into enduring mental disorders.
