Srinagar, August 31 – Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) is said to be weighing the option of backing independent candidate Aijaz Ahmad Mir in the upcoming elections for the Zainapora constituency.
Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said that Mir, a former legislator, is recognized for his close ties to the local community and his efforts to address their concerns. His campaign has been gaining attention, with support coming from various groups, including youth and community leaders.
Sources told Kashmir Despatch that the Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) leadership is in the final stages of discussions about whether to extend support to Mir. If they decide to do so, it could change the political landscape of Zainapora, especially since the party has generally avoided openly supporting candidates in recent elections. JEI’s focus on grassroots activism and local representation is likely to influence their decision on whether to endorse Mir’s candidacy.
Meanwhile, sources close to the candidate Mir have welcomed the possibility of receiving JEI’s support, indicating that his values align with those of the organization. “If Jamaat-e-Islami chooses to support me, it would reflect the work I have done for the people of Zainapora,” Mir has stated, according to sources.
However, an official announcement from JEI has not yet been made, but there is growing speculation that a decision could come soon.
Observers believe that if JEI decides to back Mir, it could impact the dynamics of the election in Zainapora and possibly shift the balance of power among the competing candidates.
