NEW DELHI, Oct 9: In a remarkable case that highlights the role of modern technology and swift law enforcement coordination, a Russian tourist’s stolen phone was tracked across state lines in India, culminating in the arrest of several suspects.
Nina Nikonorova, a Russian tourist traveling on the Gaya-Kamakhya Express, became the victim of a brazen theft on August 17, 2024. While the train passed over Bihar’s scenic River Falgu, Nina was recording videos of the picturesque landscape. Suddenly, a stick struck her hand, and before she could react, her smartphone was snatched away. The incident left her shocked and frustrated, but her quick response and timely complaint set off a chain of events that would eventually help track down her stolen phone.
Immediately after the theft, Nina reported the incident to the Government Railway Police (GRP) at the Gaya, Sheikhpura, and Kamakhya Railway stations. A formal complaint was lodged under Sections 304 (02), 313, and 317 (05) of the Indian Penal Code. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the GRP, in collaboration with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), launched an intensive investigation.
The coordinated efforts led to the arrest of two suspects, Pintu Kumar and Sajan Kumar, within days. During the operation, three stolen phones were recovered, though Nina’s device remained missing. The suspects revealed that the phone had been handed over to one Sahil Paswan, a resident of Manpur, Bihar, who had carried out the theft.
Months passed, and Nina, having returned to Russia, had almost given up hope of retrieving her phone. However, in October, the investigation took an unexpected turn. Nina received an iCloud notification indicating that her phone had become active in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Without delay, she emailed the GRP and RPF with this critical piece of information. The tech-savvy coordination between the tourist and law enforcement breathed new life into the case.
Armed with the phone’s precise location, the GRP and RPF quickly alerted authorities in Nagpur, who were able to track the device, confirming that it was indeed in the possession of Sahil Paswan. Further raids are now underway to ensure his capture and the recovery of the stolen phone.
The case underscores the effectiveness of modern technology, such as iCloud location tracking, in assisting law enforcement in combating theft. It also highlights the importance of rapid response and coordination between local and national authorities.
While the investigation is still ongoing, the swift action by the RPF and GRP in tracking the phone across state borders is commendable. Their combined efforts, along with Nina’s quick reporting, have brought the case closer to resolution. Authorities are optimistic that Paswan will soon be apprehended, bringing justice to the tourist and closing the case.
