Srinagar, Dec 19 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. This marks the first such review following the assembly elections held in September-October, which resulted in the National Conference forming a government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The meeting was attended by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, top officials from the Army, paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies, the J&K administration, and the Ministry of Home Affairs. It comes in the backdrop of ongoing security concerns and sporadic terror incidents in the Union Territory.
Discussions focused on the security roadmap for 2025, sources revealed. The review is expected to address recent terror attacks, including the October 20 incident in central Kashmir, which claimed seven lives. Prior attacks have also targeted non-local workers in the Valley.
Following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, law and order in the region fall under the purview of the central government. Official data indicates a decline in terrorist activities, with 142 terrorists killed in 2019 compared to around 45 so far this year. Civilian casualties have also reduced, from 50 in 2019 to 14 by early November 2024.
The Union home minister’s review aims to assess the current security framework and outline measures to prevent future attacks and maintain stability in the region.
