Srinagar, April 7 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the inaugural Vande Bharat Express service connecting Katra to Kashmir on April 19, marking a significant milestone in linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India.
Launched in 1997, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project has successfully navigated various geological and topographical challenges to become operational. Its completion is a testament to India’s engineering capabilities. The railway stretches 272 kilometers and features 38 tunnels and 927 bridges, including the highest railway bridge in the world over the Chenab River.
The arrival of the Vande Bharat train in Kashmir is anticipated to bring major changes to the region, with the potential to substantially enhance local commerce and improve connectivity across the valley.
Officials and business leaders, speaking to Kashmir Despatch, are optimistic that this train service will ease travel for residents while also attracting tourists, thus positively impacting the local economy.
Local entrepreneur Amina Khan shared her excitement, stating, “The introduction of the Vande Bharat train will simplify access for visitors wanting to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Kashmir. We believe that this new level of accessibility will lead to an increase in tourist numbers, which will greatly benefit local shops and dining establishments.”
Government representatives echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the economic possibilities presented by the new train service. By linking key towns and cities in the valley to other parts of India, it is expected to foster trade and create new employment opportunities in various sectors, including hospitality, retail, and agriculture.
Tourism, which is vital to Kashmir’s economy, is expected to thrive with this initiative. The Vande Bharat train will connect popular tourist attractions like Gulmarg and Pahalgam to urban centers, enhancing the convenience for travelers wishing to experience the region.
Additionally, experts suggest that enhancements in transportation infrastructure may lead to increased production and distribution of local handicrafts, allowing artisans to reach broader markets.
“The launch of this rail link is more than a mere infrastructural achievement; it represents a significant advancement in accessibility for Kashmiris, especially during the challenging winter months when road travel often becomes difficult. This enhanced connectivity is set to stimulate tourism and local businesses while bridging the geographical and emotional distance that has historically existed with the rest of the nation. Although we must be vigilant about maintaining operations during unfavorable weather, the true benefits of this rail service will unfold as the region adjusts to these developments,” noted experts.
