SRINAGAR, June 2: Peoples Democratic Party president and former J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday called for political reservation for Kashmiri Pandits, stating that their genuine representation would help address their marginalization and remove the unfair stigma often associated with Kashmiri Muslims.
Speaking to media persons at her Gupkar residence after meeting Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Mehbooba said, “Kashmiri Pandits should be given representation through proper reservation, not just symbolic nominations. True empowerment will pave the way for reintegration.”
She said she raised several issues with the LG, including the release of individuals detained under minor charges ahead of Eid, and the importance of local involvement in managing the annual Amarnath Yatra.
Mehbooba emphasized that the return of the displaced Pandit community hinges on their political and social empowerment. “The time has come to collectively correct the historical narrative and show solidarity with our Pandit brethren,” she added.
Highlighting the role of locals in the pilgrimage, she said, “People of Kashmir have always ensured the smooth conduct of the Yatra and must continue to be part of the process.”
Calling for compassion during Eid, she urged the administration to release those with no serious charges and bring back detainees held in jails outside J&K closer to their families.
Taking a dig at National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, she said, “Unfortunately, he’s undermining his own elected setup. Instead of raising critical issues like the Waqf Bill, he chose to welcome a Union Minister at the Tulip Garden.”
Mehbooba added that she had conveyed these concerns to Omar Abdullah and expressed hope that the administration would act on them.
