Can This Year’s Amarnath Yatra Jumpstart Kashmir’s Tourism Recovery?

Srinagar, June 30: As the Shri Amarnath Yatra is all set to commence from July 3 in Jammu and Kashmir, all eyes are on it. Business owners and locals are hopeful that this pilgrimage could be a game-changer for reviving the tourism industry, which suffered a major setback after the deadliest Pahalgam attack on tourists, where 26 innocent travelers were martyred by terrorists.

With high hopes, people are eagerly awaiting the return of tourists to the valley. Although tourist numbers have started increasing, the pace has been slow. However, expectations are high that the Shri Amarnath Yatra could be a turning point in reviving Kashmir’s tourism industry.

Shamshad, a hotelier in Kashmir’s Sonamarg, told *Kashmir Despatch*, “We are extremely happy to see tourists returning after a long halt. Tourism is our backbone—half of Kashmir thrives on this industry. This year has been particularly bad, with many people in the sector facing losses. However, we are eagerly waiting to welcome visitors back to the valley with love and respect.”

He added, “We see the Shri Amarnath Yatra as a potential game-changer for all of Kashmir and hope it brings a positive turnaround.”

Jibran, a restaurant chain owner, shared his optimism, saying, “With the authorities working tirelessly to ensure a smooth Yatra, this event could definitely help revive our businesses. Tourists play a crucial role in our economy, and we believe this could be a transformative moment for Kashmir.”

Amin, a local shopkeeper in Pahalgam, expressed his excitement to Kashmir Despatch, saying, “The return of tourists brings us immense joy. Tourism sustains our community, and after a difficult season, we are ready to welcome visitors with open arms. The Shri Amarnath Yatra could be the revival we’ve been waiting for.”

Farid, an adventure guide in Gulmarg, shared his hopes: “The return of tourists is a ray of hope for everyone in the tourism sector. Our livelihoods depend on this industry, and with the Shri Amarnath Yatra approaching, we believe it can reignite Kashmir’s spirit. We are prepared to offer unforgettable experiences to every visitor.”

Leela, a boutique owner in Srinagar, said, “The rise in tourist footfall is bringing back smiles. Our businesses have suffered this year, but the Yatra could change everything. We are excited to showcase Kashmir’s beauty and hope it revitalizes our valley.”

Bashir, a local tour driver, added, “The prospect of more tourists fills us with hope after such tough times. With the authorities ensuring a smooth Yatra, we believe this could mark a new beginning for Kashmir’s economy. We can’t wait to extend our warm hospitality to all guests.”

Earlier in the day, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stated that the administration and the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board have significantly improved arrangements for this year’s pilgrimage. He emphasized that security agencies have worked closely to ensure a safe and smooth Yatra for devotees.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed his hopes, saying, “We pray for the safe and successful conduct of the Yatra.”
