The people of Kashmir have a right to consume food that is safe, hygienic, and untainted by malicious profit motives. Unfortunately, a few unscrupulous suppliers and dairy operators are endangering lives by compromising quality standards for economic gain. Such acts are not just criminal; they are deeply unethical and reflect a disturbing disregard for human health and life.
It is here that the role of the Food Safety Department becomes pivotal. While sporadic checks have been conducted in the past, these need to be institutionalised into a robust, consistent, and transparent regulatory mechanism. Random inspections, regular sampling, and public disclosure of results must become the norm rather than the exception. Advanced testing laboratories should be upgraded and decentralized to ensure timely action against adulterators.
Moreover, awareness campaigns targeting both consumers and dairy producers are the need of the hour. Educating farmers and milk vendors on hygienic practices and encouraging self-regulation within the dairy sector can go a long way in creating a culture of compliance. Simultaneously, the public must be empowered to identify and report suspicious milk products. Simple home tests for adulteration, if promoted effectively, could also serve as a powerful deterrent.
The long-term health implications of consuming adulterated milk — including kidney damage, gastrointestinal diseases, and developmental disorders among children — are too severe to be ignored. If we are serious about building a healthy society, then ensuring the purity of our food chain must be a top priority.
Therefore, the Food Safety Department of Jammu and Kashmir should launch an intensified crackdown on adulterated milk and milk products. It must act not only as a regulator but as a guardian of public health. Let us not wait for another health emergency to wake us up. The time to act is now — for the sake of our families, our children, and the collective well-being of our society.
