Awantipora, 09 September: IRP-23 Battalion conducted a Farmer Awareness cum Mobilisation Camp Titled “Organic Farming with special focus on Saffron Cultivation” at Lethpora under Civic Action Programme (CAP). The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation of local farmers and other community members.
The camp was aimed at sensitising the local farmers about the benefits of organic farming practices, improving soil health, reducing input costs and enhancing the quality and global demand of Kashmir saffron. Mr. Waheed-Ur-Rehman(Chief Agriculture Officer, Pulwama) alongwith his team of subject matter experts/officers highlighted scientific techniques for organic farming including Saffron Cultivation, soil enrichment techniques, organic pest control measures and Government Schemes available to support farmers/cultivators in transitioning towards sustainable agriculture.
During the programme, deliberations were held on preparation and use of organic manures and bio-fertilizers. The stories of local Progressive farmers, who have adopted organic practices) were shared, motivating others to follow similar paths. Participants were also educated about certification processes, market linkages and branding of organic produces particularly saffron to fetch higher returns.
Addressing the gathering, Sh. Bakar Hussan Samoon-IPS (Commandant IRP-23d Battalion) appreciated the overwhelming response of the farmers and stressed the importance of adopting organic methods for conserving the unique heritage of Kashmiri saffron while ensuring ecological balance and long-term livelihood security.
The event concluded with an interactive session, where farmers raised field level challenges and received guidance from the experts. A pledge was taken by the participants to gradually adopt organic cultivation practices.
The programme not only achieved its goal of mobilizing farmers particularly saffron growers towards organic farming but also reaffirmed the commitment of the Agriculture Department to support farmers with training, resources and linkages for sustainable agricultural development in the area.
