Srinagar, Sept 13: Ganderbal Police have booked a notorious fraudster for impersonating as senior government officers and cheating gullible people on the pretext of providing jobs, officials said.
In a statement issued to Kashmir Dot Com, Ganderbal Police said that a case FIR No. 136/2025 under section 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Police Station Ganderbal against the accused identified as Illyas Hameed Bhat, son of Abdul Hameed Bhat, resident of Bakura, Ganderbal.
According to police, the investigation has revealed that the accused posed at different times as a DySP in the National Investigation Agency (NIA), an administrator at Kashmir University, and even as a senior officer in the Enforcement Directorate (ED). By impersonating as influential officers, he allegedly lured and cheated several individuals by promising them government jobs in exchange for money.
Police further said that the accused had prepared fake and forged documents, including job appointment letters and fake identity cards. After obtaining a warrant from the court, a search was conducted at his residence on Saturday, during which incriminating material was recovered, including forged appointment orders and fake IDs.
“It is pertinent to mention that one FIR has already been registered against him at Police Station Nishat, Srinagar, in a similar case,” the statement added.
Police have appealed to the general public that if anyone has been cheated or defrauded by the said individual, they should come forward and report the matter to the nearest police station.
