Rein in Extravagance

Date:

Observe Austerity in Weddings

In recent years, weddings in Kashmir have transformed into displays of unchecked extravagance. What was once a sacred union celebrated with simplicity and heartfelt rituals has now become synonymous with lavish feasts, endless courses of food, glittering décor, and wasteful expenditures. This shift in social culture calls for urgent introspection and a collective resolve to adopt austerity measures in our marriage ceremonies.

The heart of the matter lies in how weddings, which should be an occasion of joy and blessings, are increasingly becoming a financial burden. Families, even those from modest means, feel pressured to emulate the grandeur displayed by others. From arranging multi-day events to serving dozens of dishes at wazwan, expenses often spiral out of control, leaving many households indebted for years. The social compulsion to keep up appearances has inflicted severe psychological stress on parents and guardians, particularly those with daughters to marry. It is not uncommon to hear stories of families selling land, livestock, or lifelong savings merely to ensure their celebrations meet societal expectations.

This culture of ostentation is not only harmful at the household level but also corrosive at a societal scale. Food wastage at weddings has reached alarming proportions. Plates heaped with rice and meat often end up in garbage bins while countless families in Kashmir continue to struggle with poverty and food insecurity. Extravagant spending also reinforces class divides, creating a visible gap between those who can afford opulence and those who cannot. Such a practice undermines the very spirit of marriage, which is meant to be an egalitarian and spiritual bond, not a competition of wealth.

Austerity, therefore, is not merely an economic or cultural necessity but also a moral obligation. Religious teachings in Islam repeatedly emphasize moderation, simplicity, and the avoidance of waste. The Prophet (PBUH) himself advocated for simple weddings, underscoring that the most blessed marriages are those with the least burden. Yet, in practice, our society has drifted far from these principles. Returning to austerity is not about depriving weddings of joy but about reclaiming their true essence: dignity, simplicity, and collective happiness without burden or waste.

Concrete measures are urgently needed. Social and religious leaders must lead from the front, setting examples through their own family weddings. Community-level initiatives—such as standardizing the number of guests, limiting the number of dishes served, and discouraging excessive gifts and dowries—should be institutionalized. Government regulations, though difficult to enforce without societal support, could complement these efforts by restricting unnecessary extravagance. Most importantly, public awareness campaigns must highlight the virtues of simple weddings, framing them not as a compromise but as an honorable practice that protects both dignity and economy.

It is also worth remembering that austerity does not diminish joy. A simple wedding can still be memorable, filled with music, prayers, laughter, and blessings. What it strips away is only the hollow competition of wealth, leaving space for genuine human connection. Parents relieved of financial pressures will find peace of mind, while young couples can start their marital journey without guilt or debt. Society at large will benefit when resources once wasted are redirected toward education, healthcare, and community welfare.

Kashmir must take a collective stand against the growing culture of excess in weddings. Every family that chooses simplicity over extravagance is not only protecting its own well-being but also setting an example for others to follow. Let us redefine what constitutes a “grand” wedding—not the number of courses in the feast or the opulence of the décor, but the love, blessings, and sense of togetherness that it fosters.

In a time when economic challenges weigh heavily on the people of Kashmir, austerity in weddings is not an option; it is a responsibility. To embrace it is to choose dignity over debt, substance over show, and values over vanity.
