UDHAMPUR, Dec 1:
In a significant achievement underscoring the efficiency of law enforcement agencies in Udhampur, the district police have secured a conviction in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case within a record period of just two months.
The case is linked to FIR No. 139/2025 under Sections 8, 21, and 22 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Rehambal. The incident occurred on September 13, 2025, when a police patrolling team operating in the Phalata area intercepted and apprehended Janam Bhagat, son of Mohan Lal and a resident of Kambal Danga, Udhampur. During the frisking process, the team recovered heroin from his possession, following which an FIR was promptly registered and investigation initiated.
According to officials, the investigation was conducted meticulously under the supervision of DySP (Probationer) Tahzeeb Zehra Jawaid (JKPS-246487). Her leadership ensured that all legal formalities, documentation, and evidentiary procedures were completed expeditiously, enabling the police to produce the charge-sheet before the court in just two months—a rare feat in NDPS-related cases, which typically involve complex legal scrutiny.
After the completion of the trial, the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Udhampur, convicted the accused under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act. The court also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the offender.
Police officials termed the conviction a major success in their ongoing campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse in the district. They reiterated that consistent efforts, strengthened surveillance, and prompt legal action remain key pillars of the district police’s anti-narcotics strategy.
The Udhampur police have urged the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies and report any suspicious activities related to narcotics to help build a drug-free society.
