Himalayan Ibex Sighted in Gurez Valley

Date:

Officials Say Regular Winter Presence Signals Strong Prey Base

SRINAGAR, Dec 13: Amid a prolonged dry winter across the Kashmir Valley, wildlife officials in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district have confirmed the regular sighting of Himalayan Ibex in the Gurez region, particularly near the Line of Control (LoC) area of Chak Nallah in the remote Tulail Valley. The sightings, which have been corroborated by local residents and wildlife authorities, underline the ecological significance of the high-altitude region and its role as a vital habitat for rare mountain ungulates.

Local residents told Kashmir Despatch over phone that a group of Himalayan Ibex was spotted near a local stream on Friday, a common occurrence during the winter months when these animals descend to lower altitudes in search of food and relatively milder conditions.

Mohd Anwar, a resident of the area, said such sightings are not unusual during winters. “In this season, these animals often move closer to human habitations. Sometimes they are seen very near residential areas, especially around water sources,” he said, adding that locals have grown accustomed to spotting the elusive species during harsh winter months.

Confirming the development, Wildlife Block Officer Bandipora, Tanveer Ahmad, told Kashmir Despatch that Himalayan Ibex are regularly sighted in the Gurez Valley during winters, particularly along streams and lower slopes. “The animal is frequently seen in groups in Gurez, more so than in other parts of north Kashmir,” he said, attributing this to suitable terrain and availability of forage in the region.

Tanveer Ahmad also dismissed speculation about the presence of Markhor, another rare mountain goat species, clarifying that the animal captured in viral videos circulating on social media was unmistakably a Himalayan Ibex. “The physical features visible in the footage clearly confirm that it is an Ibex, not a Markhor,” he said.

Wildlife experts believe that the consistent presence of Himalayan Ibex is an encouraging sign for the region’s ecological health, as the species forms a crucial part of the high-altitude food chain. Regular sightings indicate a stable and viable prey base, which is essential for sustaining large carnivores in the region.

Wildlife Warden North Kashmir, Suhail Intesar, explained that such sightings are typical for this time of the year. “It is normal to see Ibex at these locations during winters, as they descend to lower altitudes to escape extreme weather and to find forage, which becomes scarce in higher reaches due to snow and frost,” he said.

He added that these observations confirm the presence of robust wildlife populations in the area. “Such sightings indicate that these habitats continue to support viable ungulate species like Himalayan Ibex and Musk Deer,” Intesar noted.

On the much-debated presence of the endangered Snow Leopard in Gurez, the wildlife warden said that while the region holds immense potential, concrete data remains limited. “Gurez is the only place in the Kashmir Valley where there is a confirmed report of Snow Leopard presence, based on a single photographic evidence. However, we are still not sure about the actual numbers,” he said.

While an abundant prey base often suggests the likelihood of predators thriving in an area, Intesar cautioned against drawing direct conclusions in the context of Kashmir. “Here, the Common Leopard and, to some extent, the Brown Bear are the primary predators of Ibex, rather than the Snow Leopard,” he explained.

The Gurez Valley, known for its rugged terrain and unique biodiversity, continues to draw attention from conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Regular monitoring and scientific studies, experts say, are essential to better understand predator-prey dynamics in the region and to ensure long-term conservation of its fragile high-altitude ecosystem.
