Srinagar, Dec 21: In a landmark development for the logistics and food supply chain of Jammu & Kashmir, the first-ever Food Corporation of India (FCI) sponsored foodgrain freight rake has arrived at the Anantnag Goods Terminal today.
The freight train, which departed from Ajitwal station in Punjab, carries approximately 1,384 tonnes of essential foodgrains loaded across 21 BCN wagons. It reached its destination in Anantnag at approximately 11:30 hrs.
Enhancing Regional Food Security:
This journey marks the official commencement of direct sponsored foodgrain movement via rail to the Kashmir Valley. By establishing this rail link for bulk food transport, the FCI and Indian Railways are ensuring a more robust and reliable supply chain that bypasses the traditional challenges associated with mountainous road transport.
Critical Support During Winter
The arrival of this rake is particularly timely. As the region faces harsh winter weather conditions, which often lead to the closure of the National Highway due to snow and landslides, this rail movement provides a vital lifeline.
