LONDON, Feb 27: The United Kingdom has temporarily withdrawn its diplomatic staff from Iran, citing escalating regional security concerns amid rising tensions between Tehran and the United States. The decision comes as fears grow of a potential military confrontation over Iran’s nuclear programme.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said the measure is purely precautionary. British embassy personnel have been pulled out, while the embassy in Tehran will continue to operate remotely. The FCDO warned that in-person consular support for British nationals in Iran is now extremely limited, even in emergencies.
This move follows heightened regional strain, as U.S. officials have indicated possible military action if nuclear negotiations fail. Iran, in response, has warned it could target U.S. and allied interests in the region, including Israel, raising the risk of broader conflict.
Other countries have taken similar steps. Canada urged its citizens to leave Iran if feasible, while China has warned nationals in the region to prepare for possible escalation. The U.K.’s withdrawal aligns with international efforts to safeguard diplomats and citizens amid growing instability.
