SRINAGAR, Mar 26: In a significant step aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare services in Jammu and Kashmir, the Medical Faculty Association (MFA) of Government Medical College (GMC) and Government Dental College (GDC) Srinagar has expressed gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor’s administration and the State Cabinet for approving the creation of 90 new faculty posts at GMC Srinagar.
According to a press release issued by the MFA, the sanctioned posts include 17 Professors and 73 Associate Professors, approved under Government Order No. 188 JK (HME) of 2026 dated March 25, 2026. The association termed the decision as a landmark move that will not only facilitate career progression for medical faculty but also significantly enhance the quality of teaching, research, and patient care in the institution.
The MFA specifically acknowledged the role of the Chief Minister and the Minister for Health and Medical Education (HME) in securing the approval, stating that the move reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare and academic infrastructure in the Union Territory.
The association also appreciated the sustained efforts of the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir and the Administrative Secretary, HME, for their proactive role in implementing the second phase of the three-tier system in both parent medical colleges of the region. The MFA noted that this reform is crucial for streamlining faculty structure and improving institutional efficiency.
Highlighting long-standing concerns of faculty stagnation, the MFA expressed hope that the administration will take further steps to implement a comprehensive career-based promotion scheme across medical and dental colleges in the Union Territory. Such a policy, the association said, would address promotional bottlenecks and provide much-needed motivation to faculty members, enabling them to contribute more effectively to academics, research, and patient care.
The MFA reiterated that the newly sanctioned posts mark a progressive step toward addressing systemic gaps in medical education and will ultimately benefit both healthcare professionals and patients across Jammu and Kashmir.
