24-Hour Water Shutdown to Affect Most Srinagar Areas

Sindh Canal repairs to disrupt supply from April 6; Control Room activated with helplines for public assistance

SRINAGAR, April 5: The Office of the Executive Engineer, Water Works Division Srinagar, has issued an urgent public notice announcing a 24-hour disruption in potable water supply across major parts of Srinagar city and its adjoining areas due to critical repair works on the Sindh Power Canal.

As per the notification, a copy of which is in the possession of Kashmir Despatch the repair work is scheduled to be carried out by CMD Ganderbal on April 6, 2026.

The work will directly impact the raw water supply feeding the Water Treatment Plants at Alusteng and Rangil, which are key sources for supplying drinking water to the city.
Consequently, the potable water supply in large parts of Srinagar is likely to remain affected for approximately 24 hours, beginning from 6:00 AM on Monday (April 6, 2026) to 6:00 AM on Tuesday (April 7, 2026). The department has expressed deep regret over the inconvenience caused to the general public.

The areas expected to face disruption include Zakura, Gulab Bagh, Alusteng, Khalmulla, Habak, Naseem Bagh, Busserbugh, Malla Bagh, Pandach, Buchpora, Soura, Anchar, Bohloochpora, Zoonimar, Nowshera, Bagh-e-Ali Mardan Khan, Zadibal, Hawal, Alamgari Bazar, Rajouri Kadal, Nallahmar, Nawab Kadal, Bohri Kadal, Nowhatta, Lal Bazar, Hazratbal, Sadribal, Nigeen, Saida Kadal, parts of Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowpora, Nawab Bazar, Ganpatyar, Habba Kadal, Baghwanpora, Basant Bagh, Chota Bazar, Karan Nagar, Chattabal, Kawdara, Eidgah, Maharajgunj, Zaina Kadal, Saidapora, Firdous Abad, parts of Batmaloo, Qamarwari and adjoining areas.

The general public has been advised through the notice to store sufficient quantities of water in advance to meet their requirements during the disruption period.
For any complaints or grievances regarding water scarcity or shortage, residents have been requested to contact the PHE Provincial Control Room, which will remain functional round the clock for public service. The contact details provided include landline numbers 0194-2477207 and 0194-2452047, and WhatsApp numbers 9419413914 and 9419413915.

The notification, bearing No. WWD/Sgr/30-37 and dated April 2, 2026, has been formally circulated to several top administrative and departmental authorities for information and necessary action. These include the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Chief Engineer Kashmir PHE Department Srinagar, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Superintendent Engineer Hydraulic Circle Srinagar, and Executive Engineer CMD Ganderbal.

Additionally, the Deputy Director Information Department Srinagar has been requested to ensure wide publicity of the notice in three local Urdu and English daily newspapers circulated in Srinagar city, as well as through broadcast on Radio Kashmir and Doordarshan News programmes for broader public awareness.

The notice has also been forwarded to the Assistant Executive Engineers of City, NWR, Doodh Ganga and Mechanical Water Works Sub Division Srinagar for information.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to completing the repair works within the stipulated timeframe and restoring normal water supply promptly, while seeking cooperation from the public during the temporary disruption.
