Ganderbal, July 30: Three persons, including two schoolgirls, were injured after a speeding Alto car allegedly hit the students on the Srinagar–Leh National Highway in the Gund area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Thursday.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV.
According to officials, the accident occurred when an Alto car bearing registration number DL9CL9539 struck the two schoolgirls while they were walking along the roadside.
Following the impact, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which veered off and crashed, leaving one of its occupants, Gh Rasool Mir, a resident of Gagangir, also injured.
The injured schoolgirls have been identified as Maliha Afzal, daughter of Mohammad Afzal Shayir, a resident of Gulabbagh, Srinagar, presently residing at Fraw Haknar, and Suhana Khursheed, daughter of Khursheed Ahmad Baba, a resident of Fraw Haknar.
Soon after the accident, locals and passersby rushed to the spot and shifted all the injured to Primary Health Centre (PHC) Gund, where they were provided first aid before being referred to SKIMS Soura for specialised treatment.
Meanwhile, CCTV footage of the incident surfaced on social media, showing the speeding Alto striking the two schoolgirls before the driver lost control and the vehicle crashed.
The video has triggered concern among local residents, who have once again demanded stricter enforcement against overspeeding and reckless driving on the busy Srinagar–Leh National Highway.
Gund Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident.
The Alto car bearing registration number DL9CL9539 has been seized and taken into police custody, while further legal proceedings are underway.
