Srinagar, August 13: Security agencies across Kashmir have put in place a robust security setup ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters, Birdi said full-dress rehearsals were conducted in different districts of the Valley along with rehearsals of security arrangements ahead of the main Independence Day programmes.
He said security arrangements have been strengthened at major venues as well as across Srinagar city and other districts of Kashmir to ensure the peaceful and smooth conduct of the celebrations.
The preparations include rehearsals of security arrangements at various locations ahead of the main functions scheduled for August 15.
Birdi also appealed to people to participate in the Independence Day celebrations in large numbers, stressing that the occasion is ultimately a public function and the police’s role is to facilitate its smooth conduct.
“Since it is the function of the people, we ask people to participate in this function in large numbers so that it can be carried on successfully,” Birdi said.
The IGP’s remarks came amid heightened security preparations across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Independence Day, with authorities focusing on major venues, Srinagar city and other parts of the Valley.
Earlier, Birdi had said that multi-tier security arrangements had been put in place not only at venues but also around Srinagar and across all districts of Kashmir.
When asked about the recent terror attacks in South Kashmir and whether investigators had made any breakthrough, Birdi said the matter was under investigation and declined to share details at this stage.
He said information would be shared with the media at an appropriate time once it could be disclosed.
