New Delhi: Yesterday, 11 September 2026, marks a landmark achievement in the *Rishikesh-Karnprayag New BG Rail Line Project* with the Final Breakthrough of Escape Tunnel-1, marking the 41st Tunnel Breakthrough of the project.
With this breakthrough, Escape Tunnel-1 is now fully connected through its entire length of 10.847 km, making it the 2nd longest tunnel of the project.
The achievement is particularly significant considering the challenging Himalayan geology encountered throughout the tunnel. The entire stretch passes through highly tectonized, multi-folded and extensively faulted rock masses, with widespread shearing and locally intense crushing. These adverse geological conditions led to the development of thick mylonite zones, primarily associated with the proximity of the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT).
Successfully completing the excavation and achieving the final breakthrough through such complex geological conditions is a testament to the technical expertise, perseverance, teamwork and commitment of all stakeholders involved.
With 41 breakthroughs now achieved, the project is steadily moving towards completion. The remaining five breakthroughs are expected to be accomplished within the next year, bringing this prestigious Himalayan railway project closer to its ultimate goal.
